Project Description

The mosque is organized into three primary components inspired by the spatial hierarchy of traditional Bahraini architecture: the main prayer hall (covered indoors) and the main prayer hall extension (covered outdoors), the courtyard (shaded outdoors) and service third. The service component accommodates the ablution and toilet facilities, Quran classrooms, staircases, and two residences for the imam and the rector, creating an integrated religious and educational environment that remains active throughout the day beyond prayer times. The spatial organization of the mosque responds to varying occupancy patterns and energy use. The main prayer hall is primarily activated during peak attendance such as Jumu’ah and Taraweeh prayers, while the prayer hall extension accommodates smaller daily congregations, allowing the mosque to operate more efficiently throughout the year. During major gatherings, the courtyard functions as an extension of the prayer space while also acting as a climatic and social intermediary space. The upper floor contains the women’s prayer area, subdivided into three interconnected zones responding to different user needs: a main prayer space, a sound-insulated area for mothers and children, and a seniors’ section equipped with seating to ensure priority accessibility and comfort for elderly worshippers. The design approach emphasizes dignity, inclusivity and equal spatial quality across all user groups. Structurally, the mosque combines a reinforced concrete skeletal framework with a roof structure composed of 108 modular pendentive domes. Beyond their formal presence, these roof elements serve important environmental functions by allowing high-altitude northern breezes to naturally ventilate the interior while admitting soft indirect daylight without glare. The roof system also integrates rainwater collection strategies for reuse in irrigation and cleaning purposes, reinforcing the project’s environmental agenda. The mosque is conceived as a behavior-driven environment where architecture subtly guides movement, orientation, and spiritual experience through clarity, proportion, light, and atmosphere. Materiality, patterns, textures, and the muted color palette draw inspiration from Bahraini architectural precedents, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens attempting to create a calm, timeless and contextually rooted spiritual environment.
