Project Description

Al-Gami’ al-Kabir at al-Khamayel is a pioneering mosque project aiming at reclaiming the symbolism and holistic status of the mosque; Islam’s most sacred building: symbolically earth in its entirety (وجعلت لى الأرض مسجدا وطهورا).
This prophetic tradition mentioned above is architecturally translated by means of the unique design, material and hybrid-structural system.
Rammed earth is the main construction material, that promises to achieve the highest environmental and economic performance, as well as pioneering a futuristic Egyptian aesthetic, stemming from the oldest building material; earth. The use of rammed earth minimizes direct and indirect costs of construction, as well as operating & maintenance costs. It is also known to have air purifying qualities. This could be seen as a cutting-edge technological translation of the prophetic expression “tahoora” طهورا.
