Design Concept
A family home overlooking the open landscape of Niari in Nairobi, this house is designed as a singular volume with strategic subtractions to define its main living spaces. These subtractions create a balance between privacy and communal areas, connecting the residents to the surrounding landscape while maintaining a sense of privacy within the home.
The building’s core concept revolves around using the natural soil from the site as a load-bearing material, minimizing the need for reinforced concrete. Only essential concrete beams support the slabs for the first floor and roof.
Project Description
The house's ground floor central living area aligns with the main axis of the entrance, serving as a transition and activity space. From street level, it gradually opens up to the northern garden, offering a panoramic view of Niari's natural landscape.
The first floor offers more private spaces for the family members. A southern terrace is linked to the master bedroom and one of the single rooms.
